A csáp testhosszúságú. A hímek torháta jellemző módon felfelé hajlik, majdnem nyeregszerű, rövid (3-5 mm, brachypter), sárgás színű szárnyakkal. A nőstények mellső szárnya pikkelyszerű (squamipter), alig látszik ki a torhát alól. Túlnyomóan zöld színű, a hímek háta vörösbarna, fekete és sárga potrohcsíkokkal. Gradáció esetén tarkább, sötétebb színű, sőt fekete példányai is lehetnek. A Kárpát-medencében elsősorban a Kárpátok és a középhegységek rétjein fordul elő, de az alacsonyabb medencékben az üdébb réteken is megtalálható. Az Alföld belső részein szigetszerű előfordulású (Ohat, Békés), valószínű egykori kiterjedtebb area reliktumaként. Erős hangját 30-40 m-ről is jól hallhatjuk. Elsősorban délelőtt ciripel. Nagyon jellegzetes hogy ennek a fajnak az éneke több, egymáshoz szünet nélkül kapcsolódó, de egymástól eltérő hangzású részből épül fel. Az ének egy olyan folyamatos berregés szerű résszel kezdődik, ami a még viszonylag lassú szárnymozgás miatt egyenetlen, zakatoló jellegű; ezután az állat szárnymozgása hirtelen nagyobb sebességre vált, és ekkor a hang zakatoló jellege megszűnik egy homogénebb hangzású, még mindig folyamatos berregést hallunk; ezután az állat folyamatos berregést egy-egy rövid hangos cikkenéssel szakítja meg, majd az ének egy ilyen cikkenés sorozattal zárul. Ha megpróbálunk megfogni egy ilyen szöcskét, a következő reakciókra számíthatunk: nem próbál ugorva vagy futva menekülni, (ami bölcs dolog részéről, hiszen pukkancs zöld testét egyébként is nehezen vonszolja a fűszálak sűrű szövedékében, mozgásával csak elárulná magát, elmenekülni nem tudna) hanem fejjel lefelé az aljfűszint sűrűjébe veti magát, ahol aztán mozdulatlanságba dermed. Itt színe, és a potrohvég alakja miatt nagyon nehéz felfedezni.
