Abstract

Evidence is accumulating that halting biodiversity loss requires effective cooperation between conservation and science. One possible contribution to such collaborations is to improve open and free data exchange. Here we introduce a conceptually new solution which can serve as a common interface for research and conservation. Our system (openbiomaps) is based upon a cooperation among several institutes and NGOs to maintain a computer network and an application framework for various ecological databases. The users of openbiomaps are allowed to develop new databases and the application framework provide several helper applications for maintaining. Besides, several functions are available to provide data access of the databases on the web or from desktop applications. We applied standard data formats for improve the compatibility with other databases and applications. Further, we did pay special attention to simple maintenance and low operation costs to provide a long-term and reliable system for biodiversity research and conservation.
